Shri Chandramouleshwara Temple

Unkal, Karnataka


Chandramouleshwara Temple which is situated at Unkal of Karnataka is dedicated to Paramshiva. About 900 year old temple showcases architectural skill of Chalukyas. This is preserved by ASI due to the marvelous sculptures here.

It is said that Chalukyas built the temple in the 11th and 12th century to show off their skills and power to their enemies. It is believed that this temple was built overnight by a group of skilled sculptors. It was planned to finish the work by morning, but they couldn't complete the work on said time and thus structure is incomplete.


Temple does not have gopuram. Eventhough this is unfinished temple it's architecture is excellent. Temple have two Shivalingas, one is Chaturmugha Linga means four faced Shiva Linga. Several devotees arrive here to have darshan on Monday

Vittala Panduranga and Narahari Sonar Narahari Sonar was a great Shiva Bhakta who lived in Pandharpur. He worshipped Mallikarjuna Shiva temple near Vittal Temple, but never wished to  look at Vithoba's temple even once. Narahari Sonar was a gold Smith who was excellent in his work.  One day a merchant who was childless offered to donate a gold kavacham to Panduranga if he is blessed with a child. His prayer was answered and merchant visited Narahari Sonar, and requested him to make kavach. But Narahari Sonar a being a Shiva Bhaktha denied this. Merchant pleaded that he will bring measurements of Panduranga so that Narahari need not come to temple.  Narahari agreed to make the jewel and made jewel with measurement provided, when it was offered to Panduranga it turned out to be very small. Measurement was taken again but this time too big. The temple priests asked to bring Narahari Sonar to take measurements. Narahari Sonar refused first,  but tieing eyes he was brought to the temple

Koppudai Amman Temple Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu Koppudai Nayaki Amman Koil is located in Karaikudi. Adi Shankaracharya, visited this temple and has installed Sri Chakra. Vigraham of Devi is made of Panchaloka, (a mixture of 5 metals).  Another uniqueness of Temple is that Utsava Moorthy and Moola Vigraham is the same. This is seen only in Chidambaram Natarajar Temple.  There were two sisters Koppudai Nayaki and Kattamma. Koppudai Nayaki treated her sister’s kids as her own.  But Kattamma didn't allow this. With anger Koppudai Nayaki cursed her sister and kids to become stones, she then severe tapasya and merged with Amman.  The Panchaloka, has many healing powers which cures various illness.  Matre Namah
