Rameshwaram Temple
Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu
Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, is one of 12 Jyothirlingas. The term Rameshwaram means the abode of Shiva worshipped by Rama. Shri Rama worshipped Paramashiva here to get rid of Bhrahmahatya dosham as Ravana was a Brahmin, There was no Linga to worship so Rama suggested Hanuman to bring Lingam from Kailasam.
Hanuman could not return in time so Mata Sita made a Lingam of sand and Shri Rama installed it in auspicious time. When Hanuman returned he felt disappointed. Rama consoled Hanuman and installed his lingam (Visvalingam) next to other Linga.
Shri Rama ordered that the Lingam which Hanuman brought should be given first pooja and offering which is carried out even today. There are 22 Theerthas (ponds) inside the temple, a dip in each well will relieve all sins. Each well water is different in Nature.
