Masilamaniswara Kshetram, Thirumullaivayil

Masilamaniswara Kshetram
Thirumullaivayil, Tamil Nadu

Masilamaniswara Kshetram is located in Thirumullaivayil. Temple is one among the  Paadal Petra Sthalam. Paramashiva is worshipped as Masilamani Easwarar and Parvathi Devi as Kodiyidai Amman.

Sthala Puranam says that,  there lived two tribesmen, Vaanan and Onan. The King who ruled the area wanted to put an end to the attacks of tribesman by defeating in a war. With all his army he king set out for the war in an elephant. It was a dense forest and elephant's leg got stuck in a creeper of Jasmine ( mullai) plant. To free the elephant, king went on to cut the creeper with his sword. Suddenly, blood came oozing out and found it was a Shivalingam bleeding.

The king felt very sad by his action of injuring Shivalingam. Paramashiva and Parvathi Devi appeared before the king. Mahadeva asked the King to build a temple for him there and promised that he would reside there as Masilamaniswara. Paramashiva sent his Nandi to defeat tribesman. Therefore Nandi is facing outwards ( opposite to sannidhi )in this temple, ready to leave for the war. There is a wound on Shivalingam here and sandalwood paste is applied to inorder to heal it. It is believed that Vashista Muni got Kamadhenu here after doing tapasya.

Om Nama Shivaya
