Sri Nellivananathar Temple is located in Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu, Paramashiva is worshipped as Nellivaneswarar /Aamlavaneswarar and Parvathi Devi as Mangala Nayagi. Nellikka/ gooseberry is Sthala Vriksham. Paramashiva is swayambhu here.
Sthala Puranam says that, Surya Deva, Mahavishnu, Durvasa, Brahma and Chandra worshipped Paramashiva here. Durvasa Muni who was famous for his anger was relieved from it after worshiping here. Brahma created Theertham in the Temple and worshipped Mahadeva here thus the Theertham is called Brahma Theertham.
A devotee came to worship here and saw wild beasts here causing disturbance to all. He informed this to the King. King Chola cleaned the forest and built temple here. Amala in Sanskrit means Gooseberry, the sthala vriksham of the temple. King Chola was also called Amlakesha Chola. Temple is one among paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam. Surya pooja is very famous here. As all the wishes of People are fulfilled here, Temple is called Sarva Uthamapuram. Maha Shivaratri is famous in this Temple.
