Thenupuriswarar Tirukovil, Patteeswaram
Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu
Thenupuriswarar Temple also called Durga Devi temple, is one among the Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam. Paramashiva is worshiped as Thenupuriswarar and Parvathi Devi as Gnanambigai.
Parvathi Devi did Tapasya here and all Devas resided here as trees. Kamadhenu sent its Calf Patti for helping Devi's pooja. Patti too made a Shivalingam in sand and worshipped Paramashiva. Pleased with tapasya of Devi, Paramashiva appeared here and also merged in the Shivalingam made by Patti the Calf. Thus this place came to be known as Patteeswaram. When Sambandar came to worship here Paramashiva asked Nandi to give way for Sambandar. Nandi here is seen slightly left rather than straight in all other temples.
It is believed that Sree Rama came here to relieve himsef of the dosham for killing Vali from a hiding. Muthu Pandal festival is very famous here, remembering how Paramashiva welcomed Sambandar by his Bhoothaganas.
Om Nama Shivaya
