Veerateeswarar Temple, Cuddalore

Veerateeswarar Temple
Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu

Veerateeswarar Temple Thiruvathigai is located in Cuddalore District of Tamil Nadu. Paramashiva is worshipped as Veerateswarar and Parvathi Devi as Tripurasundari. Temple is one among the Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam.

Sthala Puranam says that, this is the area where Tripurasamharam took place. It is believed that, 3 Asuras prayed to Brahma and obtained a wish that would keep them ever alive. They could be destroyed, only if the 3 asuras were shot by an arrow from a single person. Paramashiva made earth his Rath, Sun and Moon the wheels, Brahmma the charioteer and the Devas, his army. Thus asuras were destroyed.

Indra Deva, Brahmma Deva and Mahavishnu, Saptha Rishis, and all Devas came in chariots to worship Veerattaneswarar. Thus the temple is designed as Rath. Paramashiva is Swayambhu here.
