Agniswarar Temple is one among the 9 Navagraha temples and also one among Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam. Paramashiva is worshipped as Agneeswar and Parvathi Devi as Karpagambikai. Temple is Sukra Parihara Sthalam.
Agni Deva is said to have worshipped Paramshiva here, hence the name Agneeswarar. Sthala Puranam says that, during Vamana Avataram, Mahavishnu asked Bali for 3 steps of land. Sukracharya tried to stop Bali, and he took the form of a bee and blocked the mouth of the Kamandalam.
Mahavishnu used a dharbai to clear the Kamandalam and Sukracharya lost his eye. Sukracharya, became angry and cursed Mahavishnu. It is said that Mahavishnu did tapasya to Paramashiva here for relieving himself.
Temple is famous for the Sukra Dosha Pariharam. It is also said that Paramashiva gave darshan to Parasara Maharishi here in the form of Natarajar.
