Salem, Tamil Nadu
Ashtabuja Venugopalaswamy Temple is located in Belur of Salem district. Mahavishnu is worshipped here as Sri Ashtabuja Balamadhana Venugopala Swamy and Lakshmi Devi as Poongothai.
Sthala Puranam is associated with Arjuna and Mahabharatha. Arjuna, after Mahabharatha war decided to worship Paramashiva here to relieve himself from the effects of war. He couldn't find water for abhishekam. Sree Krishna appeared and told to shoot an arrow towards the north.
As soon as the arrow was shot, water came from Aran Ootru Malai that was said to be as white as milk. He performed an Abhisheka for Shiva at the temple opposite the Ashtabhuja Venugopalan temple.
Another story says that, Vasishta Maharshi did a Yagna in this temple. Mahavishnu is worshipped here with ashta Bhuja ( 8 hands). It is believed that those who visit this temple and offer sincere prayers will be liberated from Kama.
