Gnana Saraswathi Temple is located on the banks of Godavari River at Basar, Telangana. Temple is one among the 2 famous Saraswathi Temples in India, the other is Sharada Peeth.
Sthala Puranam says that, Vyasa Maharshi was searching for a place to stay after the Kurukshetra War. He came to the Dandaka Forest and saw the area where Temple is now situated. He started tapasya here. Thus the place is also called Vasara, later called Basar. Devi asked Vyasa Muni to place 3 handfull of sand daily. With these sand Vyasa Muni made Vigraham of Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Kali and thus was Prathista done here.
Akshara Abyasa Pooja is famous in the temple. Young children are brought here and are taught first letters here. Saraswathi Pooja, Mahashivaratri and Dussehra are very famous in the temple. Vyasa Purnima is also celebrated here.
