Ranganathaswamy Temple, Shivanasamudra

Ranganathaswamy Temple
Shivanasamudra, Karnataka

Ranganathaswamy Temple is located in  Mandya District of Karnataka. Mahavishnu is worshipped here as Ranganathar. This is one among the 3 temples that are built on the River Cauvery, the others at Srirangapatna (Adi Ranga) and Srirangam (Anthya Ranga).

The Temple is also referred to as Madhya Ranga as it is situated between Srirangapatna and Srirangam.

Sthala Puranam says that, river Cauvery, which flows on either side of the temple like a garland, was obstructed by a rakshasa who took the form of a rock at a place near Shivanasamudra. River Cauvery worshipped to Paramashiva  who destroyed the rakshasa, hence the name Shivanasamudra.

It is also said that Amrutha Kumbha which was brought down by the Saptha Rishis is believed to be kept under Garba Griham, below the idol of Ranganathar. It is also believed that Adi Sankaracharya visited this place and kept a Sri Chakra inside the temple.
