Subramanya Swamy Temple, Villupuram

Subramanya Swamy Temple, Mailam
Villupuram, Tamil Nadu

Subramanya Swamy Temple is located on small hillock and it also is mentioned in Thirupugazh. Eventhough, Paramashiva and Parvathi Devi is worshipped here as Viswanathar and Visalakshi Thayar, importance is given to Subramanya Swamy.

Sthala Puranam says that, after Soora samharam by Subramanya Swamy, Soora requested to accept him as Vahanam of Muruga. Soora was asked by Subramanya to do Tapasya at varaha river. Soora took the form of a peacock and started tapasya.

Subramanyar was pleased and accepted his vahanam as a Peacock at this place and thus the name Mayilam (Mayil in tamil means peacock). Temple Theertham is called Agni Theertham. Panguni Uthram is very famous in the temple.
