Aadi Karthigai

Aadi Karthigai

Adi Karthigai is an important festival celebrated on the Tamil month of Aadi, dedicated to Murugar / Subramanya. Karthigai nakshatram of Aadi month is Aadi Kaarthigai or Aadi Krithigai. Aadi month falls during Dakshinayana Punya kaalam when the Sun moves from the north to south.

Aadi Karthigai is referred to as victory of good over evil. Importance of Aadi Karthigai is in reference to Birth of Murugar. Skanda Purana, refers that Muruga took birth from third eye of Paramashiva as six different babies. Kaarthigai Pengal took care of the six babies in the Saravana Poigai. Later Parvati Devi made them to single boy with six faces. Thus Muruga is also called Aaru Mugan ( 6 faces ). Paramashiva and Parvathi Devi granted a wish to Kaarthigai pengal that Karthigai nakshatram will be given greater importance. Later Parvati Devi made them to single boy with six faces.

Thus Muruga is also called Aaru Mugan ( 6 faces ). Paramashiva and Parvathi Devi granted a wish to Kaarthigai pengal that Karthigai nakshatram will be given greater importance.
