Temples of Shiva for 5 Elements
Pancha Bhoota Sthalam means 5 temples dedicated to Shiva, representing 5 elements of nature - Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space. Mahadev is worshipped as the controller of each of five elements. Pancha means 5 Bhoota means elements & Sthala means place. 4 temples are located in TN and 1 in Andhra.
All these temples are geographically placed in almost a straight line. Among the five temples, three temples, which are Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, Ekambareswarar Temple, Srikalahasti Temples lie exactly straight.
1. Ekambareswarar Temple is located in Kanchipuram of Tamil Nadu. Temple represents Earth (Prithvi). Paramashiva is worshipped here as Ekambareshwar. The Shivlinga here is known as Prithvi Lingam. Ma Parvathi made this Lingam using sand.
2. Thiruvanaikal /Jambukeshwar temple represents Water. Paramshiva is worshipped as Jambukeshwar and Devi Parvati as Akhilandeshwari. Shivalingam has an underground water stream which flows continuously.
3. Arunachaleswarar/ Annamalaiyar Temple lies in the town of Tiruvannamalai of TN. Shivalingam represents Agni here. It is believed that Paramashiva appeared here as Ardhanarishwar.
4. Sri Kalahasti Temple is situated in Chittoor district is also referred to as the Vayu Sthalam.Paramshiva is worshipped as Kalahastishwar and Devi Parvati is as Gnanaprasunambika. Temple is famous for Rahu Ketu parihara Sthalam.
5. Chidambaram Nataraja Temple/ Thillai Nataraja Temple is referred to the Sky, Aakasa Sthalam, where Paramashiva is in the form of Natarajar his cosmic dance form. Sky is represented here with empty space and a garland of fifty one hanging golden vilvam leaves.
