Bhishmacharya, who waited for Uttarayanam left his mortal body this day...


King Devavratha of Kuru clan was fondly called Bhishmacharya. On the 8th day of Shukla Paksha of Magha month is called Bhishma Ashtami. Tarpanam is offered to Bhishma Pitamaha by everyone including those who have parents.

Bhishma had a wish of Icha Mrityu, he waited 58 days in the bed of arrows waiting for Uttarayanam & left to heavenly abode. From today, Ashtami, Navami, Dashami, Ekadashi & Dwadashi are called as Bhishma Panchakam.

Before leaving, Bhishmar revealed Vishnu Sahasranamam to Pandavas. Mahat Stotra of Mahavishnu was available to the world only because of Bhishma. In this respect Tarpanam & Sahasranama Parayanam is done today.

Vittala Panduranga and Narahari Sonar Narahari Sonar was a great Shiva Bhakta who lived in Pandharpur. He worshipped Mallikarjuna Shiva temple near Vittal Temple, but never wished to  look at Vithoba's temple even once. Narahari Sonar was a gold Smith who was excellent in his work.  One day a merchant who was childless offered to donate a gold kavacham to Panduranga if he is blessed with a child. His prayer was answered and merchant visited Narahari Sonar, and requested him to make kavach. But Narahari Sonar a being a Shiva Bhaktha denied this. Merchant pleaded that he will bring measurements of Panduranga so that Narahari need not come to temple.  Narahari agreed to make the jewel and made jewel with measurement provided, when it was offered to Panduranga it turned out to be very small. Measurement was taken again but this time too big. The temple priests asked to bring Narahari Sonar to take measurements. Narahari Sonar refused first,  but tieing eyes he was brought to the temple

Koppudai Amman Temple Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu Koppudai Nayaki Amman Koil is located in Karaikudi. Adi Shankaracharya, visited this temple and has installed Sri Chakra. Vigraham of Devi is made of Panchaloka, (a mixture of 5 metals).  Another uniqueness of Temple is that Utsava Moorthy and Moola Vigraham is the same. This is seen only in Chidambaram Natarajar Temple.  There were two sisters Koppudai Nayaki and Kattamma. Koppudai Nayaki treated her sister’s kids as her own.  But Kattamma didn't allow this.
