Pazhayannur Bhagavathy Temple, Thrissur

KERALA

Pazhayannur Bhagavathy Temple, earlier known as Pallipurath Mahavishnu temple is of about 500 years old. This was a Mahavishnu temple, before Bhagavathy Prathishta.

Sthala puranam says that Devi came from Varanasi with the King of Cochin who was a great Devi Bhakth. Sri Moolasthanam is in a peepal tree which is at the entrance of the temple. Interesting story tells how Devi came inside the temple from Sri Moolasthanam.

During a festival here, a small girl came inside the Thidappally (cooking area) of temple and asked for food. She sat inside Thidappally and ate the food provided to her and suddenly disappeared. The King who realized it was Devi, made all arrangements for Prathishta inside Thidappally itself.

There is a strange ritual here, which is Kozhi parathal (flying a rooster). It is said that Devi came in the form of a rooster. A custom of offering live roosters to Devi and feeding them which will destroy the all our Doshas important here. We can see many roosters roaming inside the temple freely.
