Thirucherai Saranathan Kovil, Kumbakonam

Thirucherai Saranathan Kovil
Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu

Thirucherai Saranathan Kovil is located in Kumbakonam District of Tamil Nadu, & is one among the 108 Divya Deshams in Tamil Nadu. Mahavishnu is worshipped as Saranathan Perumal and Lakshmi Devi as Sara Nayaki.

Sthala Puranam says that, during Maha pralayam Brahma prayed to Mahavishnu to protect all vedas. Mahavishnu advices Bhrama Deva to make a pot and save all Vedas. Thus Bhrama Deva took soil from this place and made a mud pot. He stored all the Vedas in the pot.

River Cauvery prayed to perumal here that she too should be treated as a pure like Ganga River. Cauvery River did tapasya under a tree and Mahavishnu blessed her with the wish and gave her a place in his left side in Garbhagriham. Perumal is seen here with Sridevi, Bhoodevi, Mahalakshmi, Saranayaki and Neeladevi. Kshetra kulam is Saara pushkarni. It is believed that Markandeya Maharishi had perumal darshanam here. Thai Poosam is very famous here.
