Mahashivaratri : कथा

Today is the auspicious Shivratri, vratham is undertaken to get blessings of Mahadev. Here is a story from SHIVA MAHAPURAN which explains importance of Shivratri. There lived a hunter who was very cruel. He was roaming in the jungle in search of animals.

It was Shivratri day & he climbs at the top of a tree carrying water & waited for his prey. The tree which he climbed was Bilva. After some time he heard sound of a deer. When he tried to catch it some leaves from tree & water fell down in Shivalinga which was under the tree.

The deer begged for mercy & asked him to let her go and meet her kids last time. The hunter agreed. After sometime, another deer came & again water & bilva fell on the shivalinga. That deer also asked him to give sometime. This happened many times.

Each time, he unknowingly shivalinga abhishekam. After sometime, all the deer came back & hunter was overjoyed. At that moment, Mahadev appeared & blessed him & he then was born as Guha who was dedicated to Shri Ram. Thus is the power of Shivratri Pooja & vrat. If Pooja which was done unknowingly granted this much blessings then if we offer our sincere prayers Mahadev will be pleased more.

Vittala Panduranga and Narahari Sonar Narahari Sonar was a great Shiva Bhakta who lived in Pandharpur. He worshipped Mallikarjuna Shiva temple near Vittal Temple, but never wished to  look at Vithoba's temple even once. Narahari Sonar was a gold Smith who was excellent in his work.  One day a merchant who was childless offered to donate a gold kavacham to Panduranga if he is blessed with a child. His prayer was answered and merchant visited Narahari Sonar, and requested him to make kavach. But Narahari Sonar a being a Shiva Bhaktha denied this. Merchant pleaded that he will bring measurements of Panduranga so that Narahari need not come to temple.  Narahari agreed to make the jewel and made jewel with measurement provided, when it was offered to Panduranga it turned out to be very small. Measurement was taken again but this time too big. The temple priests asked to bring Narahari Sonar to take measurements. Narahari Sonar refused first,  but tieing eyes he was brought to the temple

Koppudai Amman Temple Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu Koppudai Nayaki Amman Koil is located in Karaikudi. Adi Shankaracharya, visited this temple and has installed Sri Chakra. Vigraham of Devi is made of Panchaloka, (a mixture of 5 metals).  Another uniqueness of Temple is that Utsava Moorthy and Moola Vigraham is the same. This is seen only in Chidambaram Natarajar Temple.  There were two sisters Koppudai Nayaki and Kattamma. Koppudai Nayaki treated her sister’s kids as her own.  But Kattamma didn't allow this.
